Actos Side Effects

Actos side effects could range from frequent urination and fluid retention to heart failure and bladder cancer. If you have taken Actos and developed bladder cancer, the lawyers of Watts Guerra LLP can provide the experienced legal representation you need.

Actos, generic name pioglitazone, is a medication used to treat type 2 diabetes. Actos is part of the class of medications called thiazolidinediones. Actos and the TZD class of medications can cause or worsen adverse cardiac conditions such as cardiac heart failure (CHF).

Common Side Effects of Actos

Aside from the adverse impact Actos can have on someone who is already prone to heart failure, the most common Actos side effect is fluid retention, often manifesting itself as edema or dyspnea. Furthermore, hepatotoxicity, diabetic macular edema and fractures in females taking Actos are other serious Actos side effects.

Bladder Cancer Added to Serious Side Effects of Actos

Pharmaceutical watchdog groups have become increasingly concerned over the past year about an increased incidence of bladder cancer with Actos use. Bladder cancer is the rapid growth of abnormal cells in the bladder that can lead to death if not treated in the early stages of development, before the cancer begins to metastasize.

The fluid retention and CHF risk factors are unusual and have led to Actos becoming a less popular diabetes medication. However, the increased risk of bladder cancer is even more atypical, and adds to the concern for long-term users of Actos.

One medical study, conducted on August 17, 2011 measured the impact of taking Actos on developing the side effect of bladder cancer. According to the report, 0.22% of the 22,512 users who reported Actos side effects have bladder cancer. The largest concentration of those who developed bladder cancer after or during their use of Actos had taken the medication between 2-5 years before their cancer diagnosis.
