The NuvaRing Problems
NuvaRing is a non-oral combined contraceptive vaginal ring widely used by women across America who prefer the convenience of inserting a device once a month over taking a daily pill. While the ring is convenient, according to medical reports the contraceptive may also cause life-threatening complications. Among reported NuvaRing problems are deep vein thrombosis, pulmonary embolism, ischemic stroke, and death. Read more about side effects of the NuvaRing.
Although findings of medical studies vary in the percentage of increased risks for women using non-oral hormonal contraceptives such as NuvaRing, at least one study found that the risk for developing a blood clot could be as much as 90 percent higher than oral contraceptives. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) received at least 1,000 reports of possible NuvaRing-related blood clots, and a number of deaths are believed to be attributed to use of the contraceptive ring.
What Causes NuvaRing Problems?
NuvaRing emits a low dosage of progestin (etonogestrel), which contains desogestrel, and estrogen. Although any hormone contraceptive can increase a women’s risk for developing blood clots, the third-generation hormones such as desogestrel are believed to cause a much greater risk.
While the hormones released from NuvaRing are low dosage, the delivery makes a difference. A birth control pill taken orally passes through the digestive tract and is broken down in the liver before passing to the bloodstream. The hormones released from NuvaRing are absorbed and distributed directly into the bloodstream.
NuvaRing Problems Lead to Lawsuits
After a young woman died suddenly as a result of a pulmonary embolism, the first NuvaRing lawsuit was filed in 2008. Today, nearly a thousand women have filed lawsuits claiming the vaginal ring caused serious side effects.
With so many lawsuits filed and more expected, the cases have been consolidated in a multidistrict litigation. Trial for the first group of cases begins in 2013.
