Side Effects of Pradaxa® (Dabigatran)
Looking at the list of side effects of Pradaxa® (Dabigatran) could scare just about anyone, although the same can be said about many drugs. With each new prescription filled we receive such a list, and have almost become impervious to them. Such is the case with Pradaxa®, the new oral blood thinning medication marketed as a better alternative to warfarin in patients with atrial fibrillation. Serious Pradaxa® / Dabigatran Side Effects Reported
Soon after the new drug’s Oct. 2010 FDA approval, Pradaxa® warnings became public. Patients taking the drug suffered life-threatening and fatal bleeding events.
Although serious and fatal bleeding is an expected side effect of an anticoagulant, the rapidly growing number of Pradaxa® reports led to a safety alert and review by the FDA little more than a year after the drug hit the U.S. market.
Common Side Effects of Pradaxa® Can be Deadly
Bleeding, including serious and even fatal bleeds, is a common side effect of Pradaxa®. The risk of bleeding is higher in patients who:
- have a history of stomach or intestinal bleeding
- have a stomach ulcer
- have kidney problems
- take other medications that can increase risk of bleeding (including aspirin)
- are over age 75
A recent study also finds that patients taking Pradaxa may be at a higher risk for a heart attack or developing acute coronary syndrome. Allergic reactions are also possible.
Patients should contact their healthcare provider and seek medical care immediately if experiencing signs of Pradaxa adverse effects.
Mild side effects of Pradaxa can include:
- stomach pain or discomfort
- heartburn or indigestion
- nausea
- bloating
- gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD)
- ulcers of the digestive tract
- easy bruising
